Yalova University held a comprehensive awareness event for its academic and administrative staff as part of ‘9 February No Smoking Day’. Organised in collaboration with the Social Contribution Coordination Office, Yalova Provincial Health Directorate and Yalova Yeşilay Association, the event highlighted the fight against tobacco addiction and the importance of healthy living.
The event was attended by Assoc. Prof. Yasemin Çölgeçen, Social Contribution Coordinator at our university; Hüseyin Çiçek, Branch Manager and our representative for Tobacco Prevention and Control; Göksel Civelek, Branch Manager for Sports Affairs at SKS; Nurse Esra Uluç; and from the Provincial Health Directorate: Dr. Mercan Kestek Çıldır, Dr. Sümeyra Altun Yeşilyurt, Nurse Selda Ürtiş, Nurse Nuray Seller, and from the Yalova Yeşilay Association; Association President İbrahim Akkanat, Branch Manager Yıldız Akkoyun, and Youth Commission Member Merve Şule Yılmaz participated in the event and explained the harms of smoking and tobacco products and the benefits of quitting smoking to Yalova University staff.
As part of the event, our Vice-Chancellor Prof. Senay Yürür and our Secretary General Hayri Karaca were also visited. During the visits, the role of universities in combating tobacco addiction, the promotion of healthy living awareness and the importance of inter-institutional cooperation were emphasised.
The event highlighted that smoking causes serious health problems such as cardiovascular disease, respiratory diseases and cancer. Furthermore, information was provided about support mechanisms such as polyclinics affiliated with the Ministry of Health and the Yeşilay Counselling Hotline (YEDAM) for those wishing to quit smoking. Yalova University once again emphasised its commitment to continuing its projects that prioritise public health and support a culture of healthy living.
